As I sit here thinking of something interesting to write about last night's show at Europa in Brooklyn, I'm still trying to shake the ringing in my ears despite wearing earplugs. The $30 I paid to get in (I really need to find a hook-up) was, for the most part, well spent - $3 per band that played and played well. The whole night you feel that everyone is waiting for Obituary, one of the founding fathers of death metal, for arrive. Unfortunately, I along with probably 200 or so audience members will have to wait about nine hours - yes, NINE FUCKIN' HOURS!!!!!! - for Obituary to take the stage. Some of the bands that played ranged from early 80s thrash (Sauron and Blood Feast) to hardcore (Merauder and Undivided) to death metal (pretty much everyone else).
For the most part, everyone did well, some more memorable than others. I have to make a special mention to ALL the drummers in all 10 bands. And I thought the drummer for Sadistic Intent was gnarly, you have to check these dudes out sometime. For the life of me, I can't understand why drummers usually don't get more credit. I mean, for me at a live show, I can NEVER hear the singer and I don't care for noodling guitarist or thumping bassists. Drummers fuckin' rule! Despite the fact that a couple had some technical problems, they still rolled with it and kept it going.
The bands that played: Cyber Christ, Shadow of Demise, Undivided, Dimentianon, Sauron, Malignancy, Incantation, Blood Feast (replacing At War), Merauder, and Obituary deserve a massive applause and devil horns for the show last night. Each need your love and support, so go check them out.
For me, I was pretty happy for most of the night. I had my Corona in hand, took some trinkets and random stuff at the show including some band's demo, four of the ten band's setlists, and a couple pictures with John and Donald Tardy of Obituary. (They look nothin alike!) I was hoping to meet my boy and his band from my work at Virgin Megastore, but I guess they pussied out because they just couldn't handle death metal - they're black metal band, after all. (Sorry, guys. ;p)
From the first five bands, the crowd was pretty sedated, until Malignancy took the stage and then that when the crowd got nutty, starting with some freak show jumping off the stage and diving into an unsuspecting crowd of people. The frontman for Malignancy has a bright future as a comedian shoud he decide to give up on fronting the band. Their drummer needs to stop whining about the drum acoustics - it sounded fine, dude!
The drummer from Cyber Christ channeled his best Tommy Lee. The first out of the ten drummers and he seemed the most lively. Though with a name like Cyber Christ, do they really think anyone will take them seriously? They're a good band and need to be seen to be believed
The drummer from Shadow of Demise looked like a Jewish acountant that the bad-ass drummer he appeared to be. I mean, talk about shocking. This dude is a fucking machine, but looks-wise he looks like my Jewish uncle Mike, with the Jew 'fro and big bushy mustache and bi-focal glasses with the bridge on top.
The kid from Sauron did well, despite shouts of "YOU SUCK!" came from some chick's piehole in the back. He summoned up his best Tom Warrior "oooooh!" grunts here and there and wore a killer vest ith some of the best early NWOBHM/thrash/black metal bands of the 80s.
Incantation's front man reminded me of an older version of Glen Benton, like this is what he will have to look forward to when he's 50. Still, they managed to get that crowd fired up for the next dudes, Blood Feast, who were fronted by......
the Noxzema Girl? Holy shit! The chick from the Urban Legend movie, Rebecca Gayheart, is fronting a thrahs band? No, actually it is a dude with really high, perfectly-arched eyebrows and blue eyes. Don't let the face fool you, this dude can scream.
And I have to ask, what the fuck is it called when these idiots start swinging their arms and legs around as though they want to hurt someone? You know, the kind of stupid shit you see at hardcore shows. Well, there was plenty of that and bodies flying everywhere when Merauder came out. I don't lie when I say that the crowd parted like the Red Sea when those hardcore dudes went nuts. By far the most lively act that night with all five members jumping and pounding their instruments like monkeys in a zoo. Typical for a band from Brooklyn, like Biohazard, they were decked out in matching doorags and shorts, quite a departure from the black and red of the other bands. I spent that set protecting my handsome face while dudes were going apeshit and landing (eventually) on me and those around me. I will admit, though, it was funny - of course, I say that because I came out unscathed.
I was able to get back in the front row when Obituary came out. However, that proved short-lived as EVERYONE went crazy, including myself as we pushed, shoved, moshed, and just went nuts as John Tardy opened his mouth and belted out the opening lines of some indecipherable song. (I do know that he did sing "Evil Ways.") Ralph Santolla, in desperate need of a dentist, gave me a high-five, which was pretty cool, but when I went looking for him after the show, he apparently left. Well, it's his loss.
When Donald Tardy threw out a drumstick I managed to catch it, but so did some other little pissant, spic/chink (I couldn't tell, it was too dark and I was hyped up on adrenaline) faggot. At first, it was funny and good, but it could have turned ugly real fast. Neither one of us would let go of the stick, even though he did catch it first (I think), I wanted to have an old beaten up stick for a souvenir. At one point, I lost my footing and tripped and fell, but I still held on. Knowing that if neither one of us let go, a fight between us would definitely occur, so I did the only thing possible and I snapped the stick. LOL! I know, I'm a bastard! So I finally let him have the stick. But I will say that had he thrown the first punch, it would been the end of this dude.
In the end, I did get my pics (and re-pics) with the Tardy brothers and I lost my Metallica wristband, probably as a result of those hardcore fags jumping on me during Merauder's set. But it was a great night and I am a fan of everyone now.

Oh, shit! Where do I begin?
Well, I got in there at about 12pm and didn't leave until 11pm, so I spent a good time watching some really great bands play, some veteran and some newcomers. I got to the Second Stage and watched Behemoth play the first set, and managed to get some videos and pics off my cellphone. Then Cthonic, a Black Metal band from Taiwan, came out next and performed pretty well. The bass player was a hot Asian chick who also provided siren-like screams. And I caught a guitar pick from their guitarist! HAHAHAHA!
Next came In This Moment, with Maria Brink soaked in water and her boobs glistening in the sun in her cute blue baby-doll dress. They weren't too bad, but their style of music isn't my taste. The same for Behemoth and Cthonic. But then you had Daath come out and they took the "No Crowd-Surfing" sign and threw it into the crowd.
(Oh, yeah, and for the next four to five hours in the hot sun, I kept dodging all these bodies being tossed around, male and female. My worst fear is that some asshole will kick me in the face and break my nose. Luckily that didn't happen.)
Then you had Ankla, who played their Metal with a Latin percussion flavor added to it. And 3 Inches of Blood doing their best Iron Maiden vocally with some American Metal added to it. But it was Nile who really brought it in big time and brought the crowd back up despite the heat. There's an obvious love there between band and fans. It's palpable and deep.
Quick mention - I saw Jack Osbourne out there checking out the bands. I yelled his name out and told him to smile for the camera, but the dork just waved at me. I swear, he getting fatter and uglier like his sister!
Then we had The Showdown from Kentucky or Tennessee, and they played this medley of Metallica's "Sad But True" and "Whereever I May Roam" with Pantera's "Cowboys from Hell" and "Walk." Oh, yeah, their guitarist had DIME signature Dean guitar that was fuckin' beautiful.
When Devildriver came out, it was another high point. Dez, DD's frontman, is a fucking maniac! He's also a wine expert. Much like Nile, these guys definitely connect with the crowd, inciting the hugest mosh-pit, and making the best kind of Metal so far. That is, until Hatebreed came out. Jamey Jasta gave a schmaltzy but touching thank-you to us, the fans. Then he goes into the lovely hardcore/metal catalogue of theirs from the 10 years to now. You gotta love these guys' enthusiasm in giving us a show. The best part was when he brought this 6-year-old kid on stage and started talking to him, calling him "the future of metal." That was pretty fuckin' cool of him.
Sadly, due to my exposure in the sun for a long time, I was suffering from heat stroke. I got a bad headache to the point of nausea. Dehydration will do that to you. But I soldiered on and went up to my Lawn seat and caught a little of Lordi and Static-X, not very interesting. But then Lamb of God came out, and holy shit, did they rock. They played some of their classics "Ruin," "Redneck," "Walk with Me in Hell," "Black Label," and "Now You've Got Something to Die For." Chris Adler is the best drummer! Randy was awesome! Willie, John and Mark are masters of their instruments.
And then Ozzy came out! They had a funny mash-up series of clips with Ozzy on "The Office," "The Queen," and "Pirates of the Caribbean" and him touching Jane Seymour's tits, pouring milk on them and rubbing his face in between them. Funny shit! Got the crowd motivated. Then he comes out and does his thing! He played "Bark at the Moon," "Mr. Crowley," "Not Going Away," "Suicide Solution," "Road to Nowhere," "I Don't Know," "Mama, I'm Coming Home," "Crazy Train," "War Pigs," and "Paranoid." Oh, yeah, and Zakk Wylde was showing off again. Playing his guitar forward and backwards, and ended up playing the American National Anthem, which was pretty cool.
Great show overall, and it was free. So I came away with some pretty cool swag. I got a guitar pick, a picture with Jamey Jasta, I also shook his hand and talked to him a bit. He personally told me he's NOT going back to Headbangers' Ball. I also got a Monster Energy rag, which I lost, and a free compilation Ozzfest CD.
So, I'm happy! :)

Family Values concert - 8/14/07
Oh, fuck! I'm in so much pain that I can't even write this, but I will......
Family Values, my first, was the sickest, most fun time I ever had! I got drunk, knocked in the head by a flying CD, slid down mud, sort of got into a mosh-pit, messed up my neck from headbanging, got really wet and cold from the rain, almost got into a fight with a douchebag, and got blisters on my feet. Overall, I loved it! This is what Metal is all about!
I got there at 1:30 when the doors opened, played a little Guitar Hero (I sucked on Expert Mode!) and got a Guitar Hero wrist sweatband, and then watched Invitro jam on the second stage. Then, for the next couple of hours, bounced back and forth between the stages to watch Bloodsimple, Through You (the singer threw out free CDs and one hit me in the forehead, which caused me to bleed), Neurosonic, and then the bigger guns Flyleaf (didn't care for them), Trivium (the rain was really bad, so I skipped them), and Atreyu (I was bored of them).
I passed the time by mud-sliding, which was fun and funny. But the asshole Sound Advice staff put a quick end to it. Some girls were mud-wrestling and the dudes kept yelling for them to show their tits. God, I hate my own gender!
It got better with Hellyeah! The return of Vinnie Paul brought a tear to my eye and he gave a shout-out to West Palm Beach here. Then they played Hellyeah, Matter of Time, Goddamn, Alcohaulin' Ass, Waging War, Stone Cold Crazy (by Queen), and You Wouldn't Know. Awesome! Great band with a silly name, but they fuckin' rocked. Then after Flyleaf and Atreyu did their set, Evanescence came out and really did a good job.
Korn, though, stole the show. Hell, it was their fuckin' show. Jonathan, Munky, Fieldy, and Joey Jordison fuckin' rocked the goddamn Sound Advice Ampitheatre. They played some of their best: Blind, Faget, Freak on a Leash, Falling Away from Me, Evolution, Starting Over, and Dead Bodies Everywhere, plus some obscure ones.
Oh, yeah, and some chick flashed her tits at me. She had bologna tits, kinda saggy. And she was a Paris Hilton-wannabe tart, anyway.
Ozzfest has its work cut out for it. I can't wait!

Slayer/Manson/Bleeding Through concert - 7/25/07
(Note: These are the words of a former metal concert virgin. This is my first concert, so if I sound like a concert newbie... I am! I'll try not to bore anyone with the heavy details. I'll be happy to answer any questions, too.)
Now, the words I can say is - holy fuckin' shit! I just got back from the Sound Advice Ampitheatre after witnessing my first fuckin' metal concert and it was everything I expected and more! First off, Slayer and Manson killed! I'm talking everyone, the Slaytanic fans and the Manson Goth fans, came out and came together and it didn't disappoint. Although, sadly, Bleeding Through kept having technical problems and stopped their song twice, which kinda pissed everyone, including me off. But it wasn't their fault, and they finished their set and did pretty well. I have new respect for these Orange County guys.
The doors opened at 6pm, and it was cloudy, humid, and hot - being that its West Palm Beach, Florida. People were passing weed around to smoke and I took one quick hit. Bleeding Through came out first and, as I said before, had some technical shit going on and had to stop their song twice, and unfortunately they got heckled by me and others around. I feel bad admitting it because they actually did pretty well. But Slayer really brought it back!
BTW, if anyone's interested, Slayer's setlist tonight (though I think they played another song after Threshold that I couldn't identify) was:

4. Ghosts of War

The place naturally went crazy and it was tasteful show filled with pentagrams, baphomets, and inverted crosses. Kerry and Jeff played their asses off (Kerry threw out some guitar picks), Tom was friendly and gave a shout-out to West Palm Beach, which everyone loved, and Dave was a fuckin' monster on drums. Overall, Slayer kicked ass!
Then Manson came out and surprisingly the show was tasteful and still managed to kick equal amounts of ass. He played the usual hits: Sweet Dreams, The Dope Show, Disposable Teens, mOBSCENE, The Fight Song, The Beautiful People (show closer) and new songs like Heart-Shaped Glasses and Just a Car Crash Away, and other songs. I would say that, surprisingly, Manson got the bigger applause than Slayer. Manson really was awesome, and gave equal shout-out to WPB, especially in Dope Show where he says "Drugs are made in Florida." He flashed a buttcheek and the girls went nuts!
Fuck! My neck hurts from headbanging and I feel dizzy from the weed smoke. But it was a great night! Go see these guys, if you can. You won't regret it.
